Race report – Cold 47th edition won by Mads Brandt Pedersen and Zsofi Czellai-Voros.

Not all years we get lucky with the weather in April. This time the harsh wind and cold temperatures put it’s mark on the race. The track record time has not been beaten, the record held by Sean Rice was missed by nearly two minutes.

A new feature of this years race was two separate mass-starts, with the junior men, senior women and masters men starting first, followed by a second mass-start with just the senior men. For the latter the start proved to be a challenge, with a huge false start in the senior men race. Many paddlers started their race before the official signal, resulting in a 500 meter false start that had to be cut off, by Edwin, in a boat.
The restart followed as soon as all the paddlers made it back tot he start line. Not all paddlers had a succesful start. As Barry Hazenoot said “It was kut. I teared my boat up, right after the start”.

Because of the new start format it was hard to track where the leading pack was, the senior women finished in front of the senior men. It was a mix of race classes at the finish line.
The masters men were happy with the new format. Filipe Pereira said after the race “I’m very happy with my race, I probably reached the top 10 (he did!). The start was good, just some quick ladies and top junior guys I couldn’t keep up with.”

In the end the Mads Brand Pedersen took a sprint to beat Leonel Ramalho and Sean Rice right before the finish line.
In the senior women race Zsofi Czellai-Voros took the most advantage of the mixed start with the master men. She led the womens race and finished with a big time difference to Lizzie Broughton and Lili Katona.

The masters men is won by Emeric Petot, a minute ahead of Ronny Meisner in second place, with Guy de Prins finishing third.

The junior men did well in the new format of the long distance, wit Ory Zsombor finishing two minutes ahead of the masters men, with a time close of 1.41.28. This would have given him a 9th place overall in the senior men race.
In the short official junior women race, Lea Marchand took the gold medal, just before Aine White and local hero Iris van Bommel.

All of this has been made possible by the generous contribution of our sponsors: De Coogh Funderingstechnieken, Kanocentrum Arjan Bloem and Nelo Kayaks.
Another big thanks for our event suppliers Orange Rental, Gomes, Red Bull and Vaikobi Ocean Performance.

Save the date for next years race: 18th of april 2020

The official results are available here.

Already 106 entries, two mass-starts?

With less then three weeks to go we are getting excited about the big number of paddlers!

With the new race format of two starts at the 24 kilometer track we expect smoother starts. The first start, with all juniors, masters and senior women, is already a total number of 49 paddlers. This is probably still a mass-start.
The senior men in the second start will have more space then last year when they started with 85 paddlers at once, but will still have to start with at least 50 other competitors. And how will the washes of the first start with affect their race?

Top paddler Sean Rice in the race again!

Sean Rice, winner of the 45th edition in 2017 is back on our race. An unfortunate swim at the mass-start took away his chances to finish on the podium, but even then he managed in the 8th place overall! We expect him to be fanatic on getting a good result this year. Maybe a podium again this year?

Great to have you back Sean!

For the 47th edition of the Amsterdam Waterland Marathon the junior men are invited to race the long distance race!

After letting the senior women race along with the senior men we received the suggestion to let the junior men race the long distance race as well. Looking back at the 46th edition we consider the senior women in the long distance race a big success, we would like to give the junior men the same opportunity. Junior men are also allowed to race the short distance race as a non-official race.

This means that we will have two long distance starts and one short distance start.

Race report – Leonel Ramalho and Lizzie Broughton win 46th edition!

Leonel Ramalho has taken the victory in the 46th edition of the Amsterdam Waterland Marathon in a time of 01.37.28.36, just one minute above last years track record. Leonel took the win in the final sprint staying just ahead of Stephane Boulanger and Adrian Boros.

The mass start with over 100 people turned out rather chaotic, even killing the chances to win the race for one of the favourites Sean Rice who capsized at the starting line. Despite this bad luck Sean managed to get the 8th place as one of the first coming in from the chasing group.

With the bottleneck section under the bridge after one kilometre we could see different big packs of racers, a leading pack with four French, Ramalho and Boros. The French group of Stephane Boulanger, Quentin Urban, Jeremy Candy and Edwin Lucas had the advantage of their numbers making it possible to dominate a big section of the race.

Lizzie Broughton has managed to win yet another edition of the Amsterdam Waterland Marathon in the final sprint. Setting the first ever senior ladies long distance time at 01.47.52.54. Only one of the master men, Joep van Bakel, has been able to beat this time. So we can easily say that the top ladies have given many men a very tough race! In a post-race interview Lizzie stated:
“The start was interesting, super wavy .The narrow section just behind the tunnel I had to turn to survival mode to get through the waviest section I’ve ever raced on. Sofia took the lead in the first bit, but I managed to catch up after four kilometres by using the waves of some of the guys. I’m a happy kayaker now to race along with the men and taking home yet another win! It’s the fifth consecutive time that Lizzie managed to win this race!

The master men category was won by freshman Master Joep van Bakel. The first Dutch competitor to finish with the time of 01.42.02,79. A time that would have placed him in the 14th spot overall, a big achievement! Second in the master category came in Dutch Olaf Heijne with the ‘master of masters’ Erik Verduyckt taking a third place in the masters category.

For the junior men Matthias Majores took home this years’ win with the second place for Olivier Ost and in third Sakke Mattila. The long journey the Finnish team has made to race at the Marathon has proven successful with that third place for Sakke.

Looking back at this year’s race Keith Moule, who raced for the sixth year in a row said :”It’s the best warm up race for the international racing season, some guys have had assessment races by now, so it’s a good early test, and you get to race with some of the best guys of many different countries. I will be back next year!”

All of this has been made possible by the generous contribution of our sponsors: De Coogh Funderingstechnieken, Kanocentrum Arjan Bloem and Nelo Kayaks. Another big thanks for our event suppliers Gomes, Red Bull and Vaikobi Ocean Performance.

New distance choice for senior ladies!

After many requests we have decided that senior ladies can join the longer distance race, they will be put in a separate category and start along with all the guys in the mass start. We think the ladies will proof tough competition for many of the men in our race and we hope those ladies who choose the longer track will enjoy racing along with the guys.

This longer distance is a try-out for the organisation and every female competitor can choose freely if she wishes to race the long (21km) or shorter distance (16km).
